The river of rocks formed during the period of the ice age when glaciers covered hawk mountain. Hawk mountain is part of the Appalachian mountain range where the mountains are very rocky. The river of rocks formed with the freezing and thawing between summer and winter. The water would get in between the rocks during the Summer and when the water froze and expanded, it would break off huge boulders. The boulders would then roll down the hill and stop in the lowest part which is where the river of rocks still stands today. The rocks settled into the shape of a short river which is why this valley is called the river of rocks today. All in all, the river of rocks is one of the most amazing things, geologically about hawk mountain. (In the river of rocks you can hear the water under the rocks).
